The figures are based on Chinese customs declarations, meaning that "China's exports to Vietnam" correspond to the other side of the imports from China reported by the General Department of Vietnam Customs. Placing the two datasets side by side reveals mirror statistical discrepancies—a persistent gap of tens of billions of USD annually that has long been a subject of debate regarding border trade. China is Vietnam's largest import partner, and the breakdown by HS chapter illustrates why: electrical machinery and equipment (HS85), mechanical machinery (HS84), and textiles (HS52, HS54, HS60) account for the majority. These serve as inputs for Vietnamese goods exported to the US and Europe, meaning fluctuations in these chapters foreshadow movements in Vietnam's exports by several months. The bilateral trade balance is the difference between the two flows, calculated by titfin rather than sourced directly. Chapter code 99 represents "uncapitalized or unclassified goods" rather than a specific industry, and is retained to ensure the sum of the chapters matches the total line. Data from January 2015 onward is sourced directly from the inquiry platform of the General Department of Customs of China, updated through the most recently published month. The preceding period is sourced from UN Comtrade, with data missing for October 2012 to December 2014 as China did not report monthly data during that interval. The two sources were cross-checked over the overlapping 2015-2024 period and match to the thousandth.
