About this data
Total electricity consumption in China, broken down by three economic sectors and residential use. Because electricity is a physical metric that is difficult to manipulate, trends in Sector 2 (industry and construction) are frequently used to verify officially reported industrial growth data. Figures are CUMULATIVE from the beginning of the year, consistent with the source's reporting methodology, and reset to zero at the start of each year—except for the final row, which shows electricity consumption for the industrial sector ALONE on a monthly basis (analysts use this as a cross-check for industrial growth data, as power consumption is harder to adjust than production value). The National Statistics Office of China combines January and February data to avoid distortions caused by the Lunar New Year, meaning the monthly time series has no data point for January, with the combined figure recorded in February.
