About this data

China's merchandise import turnover broken down by 97 two-digit HS chapters, on a monthly basis, in USD. The top three chapters—electrical machinery and electronics, mineral fuels, and ores—illustrate what China purchases from the world, and their fluctuations serve as an early indicator for the prices of commodities that Vietnam also imports. Chapter code 99 represents the "commodities not elsewhere classified" category rather than an industry sector; it is retained to ensure the sum of the chapters matches the total line. Data from January 2015 onwards is sourced directly from the query platform of the General Department of Vietnam Customs, updated up to the most recently published month; the prior period is sourced from UN Comtrade, with data missing for October 2012 to December 2014 as China did not report monthly data during that period. The two sources have been cross-checked over the 2015–2024 overlap and match to the thousandth.
