They measure the median usual weekly earnings of full-time wage and salary workers, broken down by sex, race and Hispanic origin, age, occupation and educational attainment.

Who publishes this data and how far back does it go?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes it quarterly from the Current Population Survey, with the series on this page running from the first quarter of 1995.

Why use the median rather than the average?

Because a small number of very high earners pulls the average up. The median is the midpoint, so it describes what a typical full-time worker earns.

Are these earnings before or after tax?

Before tax. Usual weekly earnings are reported before deductions and exclude overtime, tips and commissions unless they are usually received.
