What does the US average weekly wage by state measure?

It measures average weekly earnings of all workers covered by unemployment insurance in each state, calculated as total quarterly wages divided by average employment and by weeks.

Who publishes this data and how often?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes it quarterly in the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, with the series on this page from the first quarter of 2014.

How much of US employment does QCEW cover?

More than 95 percent of US jobs, because coverage is based on employer unemployment insurance filings rather than on a sample survey.

How does this differ from average hourly earnings in the jobs report?

Average hourly earnings come from a monthly sample survey of establishments. QCEW is a near-census filed by employers, so it is far more accurate but arrives about five months later.

Quarterly wages and business counts by state from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, which covers all employers subject to unemployment insurance. The table gives the average weekly wage of covered workers, total wages paid in the quarter (billions of dollars) and the number of establishments, for the United States, every state and the District of Columbia grouped by census region and division, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (outside the U.S. total), since the first quarter of 2014.
