It is an administrative headcount rather than a survey or an index, which makes it the fastest reading of American air travel that exists: the collapse of March 2020, when daily volumes fell below one hundred thousand from more than two million, shows up here within a day. Note that this counts people passing through a checkpoint, not boardings, so a connecting passenger is normally counted once rather than twice. Daily since 2019.
