They measure provisional counts of deaths from drug overdose in the United States, reported for the nation, each state and census region, and split by the drug class involved.

Who publishes this data and how often?

The CDC's National Center for Health Statistics publishes it monthly through the Vital Statistics Rapid Release programme, with the series on this page running from January 2015.

Why are the figures described as provisional?

Because death certificates take time to be filed and coded. Recent months are revised upward as pending investigations close, so the last few points understate the eventual total.

Which drug categories are reported?

Counts are reported for opioids overall, synthetic opioids other than methadone, heroin, natural and semi-synthetic opioids, cocaine and psychostimulants such as methamphetamine.
