China's foreign exchange reserves — the world's largest reserve stockpile, at approximately USD 3,400 billion — alongside official gold reserves, form a continuous series dating back to 1978. Their scale and trajectory influence the renminbi exchange rate and, consequently, the competitiveness of Vietnam's exports. Since May 2015, all five IMF-compliant reserve asset components have been fully included: alongside foreign exchange, these comprise reserve positions at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), gold, and other reserve assets — meaning the "over USD 3,000 billion" figure frequently cited refers solely to the foreign exchange component. The physical gold volume series, measured in million ounces, is the only physical quantity in the table: it isolates fluctuations driven by gold PRICES from those driven by NEW PURCHASES — two dimensions that gross value figures conflate into one.
