Understanding US FED Credit (H.4.1)

The scope of this indicator encompasses total credit recorded on the asset side, comprising directly held securities portfolios alongside eligible loans and liquidity support facilities. This is a broader aggregate than securities owned outright: its fluctuations may stem from asset purchases, maturities, lending, or changes in other credit components. Therefore, the entire increase should not be interpreted as outright bond purchases.

The daily series is suitable for identifying the timing of balance sheet shifts, but overly close comparisons are susceptible to noise from settlement days, maturities, and short-term operations. It should be cross-referenced simultaneously with the preceding period to reveal recent directional changes and with the corresponding period of the previous week to mitigate operational calendar effects. The latest figures may also be reclassified or adjusted; when the total changes, components must be examined before interpreting the movement as monetary easing or tightening.

Frequently asked questions

Does credit growth immediately mean an increase in the money supply in the economy?
Not necessarily. The impact depends on the growth components, the counterpart accounts, and how transactions are settled.
Why can total credit fluctuate sharply over a very short period?
Liquidity support, short-term transactions, or maturing assets can cause the total to shift rapidly.
Can this indicator be used as a proxy for the size of the securities portfolio?
No. The securities portfolio is only one component of credit, while the aggregate indicator includes additional items.
