Understanding vietnam Labour Force - Urban

The urban labour force in Vietnam records residents classified as urban who are either employed or actively seeking and available for work. This is a classification based on place of residence rather than the location of the workplace or industry; an urban resident engaged in agriculture may still belong to this group. Urban residents who do not participate in the labour market are excluded. Compared to the total labour force, this indicator covers only a portion of the territory; compared to urban employed workers, it includes the unemployed.

Quarterly figures, measured in thousand persons, can shift due to hiring activity as well as population shifts or boundary reclassifications of administrative areas. Therefore, an increase should not be immediately interpreted as the urban economy generating that exact number of jobs. Year-on-year comparisons are appropriate for limiting the impact of Tết, hiring seasons, and temporary returns to rural hometowns, whereas quarter-on-quarter comparisons are useful for monitoring migration shocks or sudden employment shifts. Caution is warranted if the series exhibits jumps that coincide with changes in urban classification. The most recent periods are subject to revision as estimates are finalized.

Frequently asked questions

Where are individuals who live in urban areas but work in rural areas classified?
Classifications are generally based on place of residence, meaning they may still belong to the urban labour force.
Can urbanization cause this indicator to rise even if the job market remains unchanged?
Yes. Migration or changes in geographic classifications can expand the scale without stemming from new hiring.
Does this indicator represent the total number of jobs located within cities?
No, because it counts labour force participants based on their place of residence and also includes the unemployed.
