Understanding vietnam Labour Force

The labour force in Vietnam comprises individuals who are employed as well as those who are currently unemployed but available and seeking work within the surveyed age range and conditions. Individuals who neither work nor seek work, such as full-time homemakers, students, or those who have left the labour market, are excluded from this metric. Consequently, the size of the labour force differs from the working-age population and exceeds the number of employed workers, with the difference primarily attributable to unemployment.

Because the series is presented quarterly in thousand persons, the absolute level should be read rather than interpreted as a participation rate. Year-on-year comparisons are generally more useful than quarter-on-quarter comparisons, as job hunting, recruitment, and the Tết holiday create distinct seasonality. Fluctuations may also stem from demographic shifts, migration, or changes in the classification of labour status, rather than solely from economic health. Newly released figures may be estimates and are subject to revision; when unusual breaks occur, methodological notes should be reviewed before drawing conclusions.

Frequently asked questions

Are unemployed persons included in the labour force?
Yes, provided they meet the criteria of not being employed, actively seeking work, and being available for work as defined by the survey.
Why might the labour force decrease while the population continues to grow?
A segment of the population may shift to studying, homemaking, retirement, or stop searching for work, thus falling outside the labour force.
Can the labour force be used as a proxy for the number of currently employed individuals?
No. To ascertain the actual number of working individuals, one must refer to the employed workers indicator.
