About this data
The quarterly number of residential properties purchased across 15 European countries since the first quarter of 2006 serves as a volume measure of the housing market, complementing the house price index. Prices and transaction volumes rarely turn at the same time, and volumes always react first; the market cools through a sharp drop in transactions before prices actually fall. The table separates new and existing homes, accompanied by an index (2025=100) to compare cyclical patterns among countries of vastly different sizes. Three data limitations must be noted: Eurostat does not calculate an aggregate average for the bloc because each country relies on its own real estate registry system; six Euro area countries do not participate in this statistic, including Germany and Italy, the two largest markets; and Spain, Luxembourg, Cyprus, and Malta publish only indices rather than absolute unit numbers. France has the longest time series, running continuously from 2006. Source: Eurostat.
