Understanding vietnam Transport CPI Year-on-Year

Petroleum, transport vehicles, spare parts, maintenance, and transport services serving personal consumption are the primary price sources of the transport CPI. This basket does not measure transport volume, passenger traffic, or corporate logistics costs; it is also separate from postal and telecommunication prices even though both groups are sometimes broadly understood as connectivity. Fuel fluctuations usually generate rapid impacts, whereas vehicle purchase prices and repair services have slower adjustment paces.

The year-on-year index shows how transport price levels have changed compared to the same month of the previous year, rather than whether prices have just risen or fallen in the month under review. Because fuel prices can reverse quickly, year-on-year rates sometimes remain high even though current monthly prices have fallen consecutively; the general month-on-month CPI must also be examined to identify the latest direction. Tet and peak travel seasons can make transport service prices unusual, while base effects from a large fuel volatility event tend to amplify or weaken comparison ratios. This index should not be used as a direct proxy for the price of a specific type of gasoline.

Frequently asked questions

Is transportation Consumer Price Index (CPI) simply petroleum prices?
No. Fuel exerts a notable influence but represents only one part alongside vehicles, spare parts, repairs, and transport services.
Why do year-on-year indices still rise even when fuel prices fall?
Current price levels may still exceed the same month of the previous year despite declining relative to the preceding month.
Does this index reflect corporate freight transport tariffs?
Not directly. The scope of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) targets prices encountered by households in consumption.
