Understanding vietnam Food CPI Year-on-Year
The price basket here focuses on food purchased for consumption, typically rice and cereal products within the classification scope of the CPI. The indicator excludes meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, and other fresh foods; nor does it directly reflect farm-gate material prices, export prices, or producer revenues. Compared to the CPI for food and food services, this is a narrower branch. Compared to the food CPI, the distinction lies in the starch-rich group and cereal-processed products, rather than all food purchased for consumption.
A point level above the neutral mark indicates that food prices are higher than in the same month of the previous year. The year-on-year comparison reduces seasonal noise, yet rice prices can be affected by harvests, supply, and external markets, making the comparison base still very important. Tet can alter shopping structures and make a single month unrepresentative of the trend. One should not infer from this index the cost of a complete meal, as food and processed services behave differently.
