Understanding vietnam Transport CPI

Transport in the CPI aggregates price movements of goods and services serving household travel, including personal vehicles, fuels, maintenance and forms of passenger transport matching the survey basket. The index does not measure traffic flow, transport output, corporate logistics costs or general freight transport rates. Unlike the postal and telecommunications group, it is tied to physical movement; unlike transport credit, it reflects consumer prices rather than the scale of borrowing.

This group is typically sensitive to fuel prices and seasonal travel demand, so month-on-month fluctuations help identify the latest price shock but can be quite noisy. Year-on-year comparisons are more appropriate when looking at underlying trends, though the timing of Tet, holiday schedules and non-matching price adjustments across years must still be considered. Point levels are weighted aggregate indices, not specific fares or fuel prices. A heavily weighted item can dominate the overall direction while other components remain stable or decline. The latest period data are subject to review and revision.

Frequently asked questions

If fuel prices drop, does the transport index necessarily decline?
Not necessarily. The outcome also depends on vehicle prices, repairs, transport fares, and the weights of each component.
Does this index reflect passenger transport volume?
No. This is a measure of consumer prices, not a transport output indicator.
How does Tet affect month-to-month comparisons?
Holiday schedules and travel demand can shift between months, making sequential month-on-month comparisons prone to exaggerating seasonal fluctuations.
