Understanding vietnam Eating Out CPI

Eating out measures the price changes of meals, dishes, and ready-to-eat catering services purchased for consumption outside the home or for take-away, based on representative items in the consumption basket. The observed prices incorporate not only raw materials but also labor, rent, energy, processing, and service costs. Hence, this index does not overlap with food staples or food bought for home preparation. It also differs from the aggregate food and catering services group because it focuses exclusively on the completed service component rather than combining ingredients at the household level.

Meal prices usually adjust more slowly than ingredient prices as food service establishments may absorb cost fluctuations for a period before revising their menu prices. Month-on-month comparisons are suitable for identifying a widespread round of price adjustments, but customer volumes and menus around Tet can render the observed structure unusual. Period-on-period comparisons help evaluate more sustainable trends, especially as labor and premises costs gradually rise. Index points should not be interpreted as the average price of a meal, as this is a relative measure covering multiple types of dishes and locations. Changes in representative samples or the base period must also be noted when reading long series.

Frequently asked questions

Do take-out meals count as dining out?
They can if they are prepared dishes classified under catering services, rather than raw ingredients bought for home cooking.
Why does this index not rise immediately when input costs increase?
Vendors may temporarily hold prices, alter portion sizes, or accept lower profit margins before making adjustments.
Can the index be used to determine the cost of a meal?
No. The index shows the relative change of a representative meal basket, not the average monetary cost per meal.
