Understanding vietnam Core Inflation Year-on-Year
Core inflation describes underlying price trends after removing certain components from the CPI that frequently experience sharp fluctuations or are subject to special pricing mechanisms, such as food, fresh foodstuffs, energy, medical services, and education. This is neither an independent consumption basket nor a mechanical subtraction of all rapidly rising items from the CPI. The difference from headline inflation lies in the objective of filtering out short-term noise to identify more pervasive and persistent price pressures in the remainder of consumption.
The year-on-year index compares the core price level of the review month with the corresponding month of the previous year, and is thus less governed by ordinary seasonality than month-on-month comparisons. However, shifting Tet dates across months can still affect goods and services not removed from the basket. Core inflation being lower than headline inflation should not be interpreted as household living costs rising by less, because the excluded items are still paid for by citizens. When excluded portfolios, weights, or base years change, caution is required in chaining series and assessing long-term trends.
Frequently asked questions
- Is core inflation the actual increase in the cost of living?
- Not entirely. It deliberately bypasses certain expenditures that remain present in household budgets to clarify underlying price trends.
- Why might food prices surge while core inflation changes very little?
- Many volatile food commodities are excluded from the calculation, so their shocks manifest more clearly in headline Consumer Price Index (CPI).
- Against which indicators should core inflation be compared?
- It should be placed alongside headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) and groups such as housing, dining services, or consumer goods to distinguish widespread price pressures from localized shocks.
