About this data

The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for the Euro area, compiled by S&P Global and published under the HCOB brand, covers four sectors: manufacturing, services, composite, and construction. The 50-point threshold serves as the dividing line: readings above 50 indicate expansion, while those below 50 signal contraction. The PMI is the earliest indicator closely monitored by the market because it is released on the first business day of the following month, approximately six weeks ahead of all official Eurostat figures. NOTE ON SERIES LENGTH: S&P Global sells historical PMI data via subscription contracts and no free source provides this data, meaning the table only records periods from the time we commenced data collection (July 2026) onwards, expanding each month. For early indicators with continuous histories dating back to 1980 for Europe, please refer to the European Economic Sentiment Indicator table (European Commission survey) — which serves the same leading cyclical role with official and comprehensive data.
