Monthly industrial production index for the euro area and the EU (2021=100), seasonally and calendar-adjusted. The table covers total industry, three main industrial groupings (mining and quarrying, manufacturing, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply), and four use-based commodity groups (intermediate goods, capital goods, consumer goods, energy). Capital goods serve as an early indicator of the investment cycle, while energy exhibits high weather-driven volatility and should be examined separately. The subsequent section of the table (keyed with `iipx-`) breaks down data to the NACE Rev.2 two-digit level — spanning 24 manufacturing branches from food, textiles, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals to motor vehicles and electronics, alongside four mining sectors. While the first eight rows answer whether European industry is strengthening or weakening, this section addresses the more critical question of where weakness is concentrated. Since the 2022 gas price shock, two energy-intensive sectors — chemicals and basic metals — have lagged significantly behind the overall average, whereas pharmaceuticals and electronics have continued to expand; examining the headline index alone obscures these offsetting trends. Additional breakdowns by four technology intensity levels (high-tech, medium-high-tech, medium-low-tech, low-tech) capture structural shifts in the bloc's industrial base. Eight smaller economies (Ireland, Slovakia, Luxembourg, Croatia, Slovenia, Estonia, Cyprus, Malta) report data only up to the section level and are thus restricted to figures in the first eight rows.
