About this data

Monthly Euro area M1, M2, and M3 money supply, end-of-period balances — liquidity measures tracked by the ECB to assess inflation pressures. Breakdown: M1 (currency in circulation and overnight deposits), M2 (M1 plus deposits with an agreed maturity of up to 2 years and deposits redeemable at notice of up to 3 months), M3 (M2 plus repurchase agreements, money market fund shares or units, and debt securities up to 2 years). M3 is the broad monetary aggregate officially monitored by the ECB; the M3 growth rate often leads inflation by several quarters. The table includes both the M2−M1 and M3−M2 spread layers, as they reveal where money is held: in 2022-2024, M1 contracted sharply while M2−M1 expanded as rising interest rates shifted funds from overnight accounts to time deposits — a shift invisible when looking at M3 alone. Arithmetic verification must always hold: M3 > M2 > M1, and M1 + (M2−M1) = M2. Source: European Central Bank (ECB Data Portal).
