About this data

Monthly total assets of euro area monetary financial institutions (MFIs), excluding the Eurosystem — commercial bank balance sheet size. Reading this alongside the Eurosystem balance sheet reveals two distinct phases: when the ECB expands its balance sheet through asset purchases, commercial bank assets swell due to rising reserves, whereas when the ECB contracts, these reserves shrink first. The table is broken down by 21 member countries, allowing readers to assess the scale of each national banking system — the unusually large size in Luxembourg and Ireland relative to their economic scale reflects the presence of financial centers headquartered there. The latter part of the table details the complete aggregate balance sheet. On the ASSETS side: lending is disaggregated by borrower (government, private sector, other MFIs), alongside holdings of debt securities by issuer, equity and fund shares, external assets, and fixed assets. On the LIABILITIES side: deposits are disaggregated by depositor sector, debt securities issued, capital and reserves, and external liabilities. Placing this alongside the Eurosystem balance sheet shows the two moving in opposite directions regarding reserves: when the ECB purchases assets, commercial bank deposits at the central bank expand, and when the ECB contracts, this is the first item to shrink.
