About this data

Monthly deposit balances at monetary financial institutions (MFIs) in the euro area, broken down by depositing sector: households and non-financial corporations. Alongside the lending table, these represent the two sides of the banking system's balance sheet—the growth rate differential between deposits and credit indicates whether the system is experiencing excess or deficient liquidity. The table covers all 21 member countries, allowing for an immediate assessment of where deposits are flowing within the bloc; the sum of deposits across the 21 countries equals the euro area aggregate. The latter part of the table breaks down the euro area data by institutional depositing sector (households, non-financial corporations, insurance corporations, pension funds, investment funds, and other financial intermediaries) multiplied by maturity (overnight, agreed maturity up to two years and over two years, redeemable at notice up to three months and over three months, and repurchase agreements). This slice reveals depositors' responses to interest rates: every ECB rate-hiking cycle sees funds migrate from overnight accounts (which pay near-zero interest) to time deposits, with the speed of this shift varying markedly between households and corporations—the latter reacting much faster.
