About this data

Quarterly employment data by ten NACE Rev.2 economic sectors for the Euro area, the EU, and all 27 member states, Seasonally adjusted. Figures are based on national accounts (domestic concept — covering all employment within the territory, including foreign workers). The table addresses the question of which sectors are driving employment growth: in the post-pandemic period, nearly all employment gains in the Euro area have been concentrated in public administration, education, human health, and Construction, whereas manufacturing has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. The final two rows separate employees and self-employed workers, showing a wide divergence in the self-employment Share between Greece and Germany. The aggregate time series begins in the first quarter of 1995; individual series start in 1980 for France, 1990 for Finland, and 1991 for Germany. For France, Portugal, Greece, Malta, Poland, and the Czech Republic, Eurostat publishes only Seasonally adjusted data (not adjusted for working days), making the series for these six countries slightly more volatile.
