Understanding vietnam foodstuffs CPI month-on-month
The food index tracks the prices of purchased food items, notably meat, fishery products, eggs, vegetables, fruits, and various fresh or processed foods. The point level indicates how the price level of this basket changed compared to the immediately preceding month, taking consumer weights into account. The scope excludes the foodstuff group under its own classification and does not measure the prices of meals provided by food service establishments. Therefore, it differs from the aggregate food index by excluding grain products and food services outside the home.
This group is prone to volatility caused by weather, seasonality, disease, supply conditions, and storage capacity. Month-on-month comparisons are very sensitive to new supply shocks, but they can also exaggerate temporary movements, especially around Tet or when harvest seasons shift. To distinguish temporary fluctuations from underlying trends, one should examine multiple consecutive periods and cross-reference year-on-year data. Monthly data may be adjusted following revisions. If the representative sample, weights, or base period are updated, mechanical linking of point levels without checking compatibility should be avoided.
Frequently asked questions
- Does food in this index include meals at restaurants and eateries?
- No. Dining-out service prices belong to a separate component.
- Why do food indices often fluctuate more strongly than dish prices?
- Fresh commodities react quickly to supply and weather, whereas dish prices are usually adjusted more slowly.
- Does a single month of price declines show that food pressures have ended?
- Not necessarily. The decline may stem from seasonality or temporary supply, so a series of subsequent periods should be reviewed.
