About this data

The monthly Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP, 2025=100) for the euro area and the EU serves as the inflation gauge used by the ECB for its 2% target. The table includes the headline index, the core index (excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco), and four major components: food, energy, non-energy industrial goods, and services. Note that the data represent indices; growth rates compared to the same period last year or the previous month are derived automatically by the chart. Starting in 2026, Eurostat is transitioning the HICP to the ECOICOP classification revision 2 and rebasing the index to 2025=100, meaning the index series are not directly comparable with older publications based on 2015=100. The final section of the table (keyed with `hicpg-`) covers the 13 top-level commodity groups of ECOICOP v2—the same taxonomy used by the HICP weighting table. Placing the two tables side-by-side allows for calculating each group's contribution to overall inflation: the group's growth rate multiplied by its weight. The housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels group (CP04) carries the heaviest weight and was the primary driver of nearly the entire 2022 shock, while the restaurants and hotels group (CP11) clearly reflects wage pressures and is therefore cooling down the slowest.
