About this data

Monthly 10-year government bond yields on the secondary market across Euro area member states, presented side by side to compare spreads. This series serves the long-term interest rate convergence criterion under the Maastricht Treaty. Comparing countries side by side reveals CREDIT RISK within the bloc: all member states share the same currency and monetary policy, meaning the yield spread between any given country and Germany (which maintains the lowest yield and acts as the risk-free benchmark) reflects the market-demanded risk premium. This gap widened significantly during the 2010-2012 sovereign debt crisis and prompted the ECB to establish anti-fragmentation instruments. Source: European Central Bank (ECB Data Portal).
