About this data
Quarterly balance of payments for all 27 EU member states, compiled under the BPM6 standard, presented alongside two aggregate blocks to illustrate net lending and borrowing positions vis-à-vis the rest of the world. The table covers the current account balance and its four components—goods, services, primary income (compensation of employees, investment income), and secondary income (transfers). As the current account serves as a gauge of whether an economy is lending to or borrowing from the rest of the world, this specific metric foreshadowed the 2010–2012 Euro area sovereign debt crisis: persistent deficits recorded by Greece, Portugal, and Spain throughout the 2000s are clearly visible in the data years before the crisis erupted. A country's balance is calculated against the entire world, whereas the aggregate block balance reflects transactions with entities outside the block; consequently, country-level and block-level figures should not be aggregated. The figures are unadjusted for seasonality, available for all 27 member states with no missing periods—which is why this quarterly dataset runs parallel to the monthly series, the latter lacking data for the Netherlands, Ireland, and Cyprus as these three jurisdictions do not publish monthly statistics.
